Making a bread starter – take 2

After my first failed attempt at making a starter I thought I’d try again.  Once again – Im taking the recipe from the second book I bought.  It seems to be more straight forward in terms of listing actual measurements rather than relying on ‘feel’ for consistency and other things.  I started it this morning and am hoping it turns out better than my first attempt.  The first thing I did, was weigh my container so I know how much it weighs empty.  This will be important for later steps when we add more ingredients.

Turns out it weighs 274 grams.  I put a piece of tap on the side of the container and wrote this down so I wouldn’t forget.  Next I added 500 grams of flour and 500 grams of water.  I used the half white and half whole wheat flour I had mixed together during my first attempt…

Then all you do is mix it together by hand and let it sit…

Here’s a picture from the side so you can see how much is in the container…

The directions called for leaving the lid off for an hour or two then covering it until the next day.  So we’ll see how this goes.  Im a little worried the ambient temperature in my house right now is too cold for this to work but we’ll see.
